The Hour of Code

This year students in kindergarten through 6th grade participated in the Hour of Code.  Students helped write code using Blockly coding software on the code.org website.  They learned about code, loops, and functions as they wrote code to make Elsa and Anna from The Movie Frozen create snowflakes and help the Angry Birds catch those pigs.  At the beginning of the hour they were unplugged and helped Mrs. O’Donnell stack cups by giving programming commands to her as if she were a computer.  They learned that trial and error is an important part of computer science.  They also have a new respect for all of the games and websites that they use, now that they know a person had to create all of the code for it to work properly.  Students will continue to explore programming in the coming year.  They are looking forward to creating unique tasks for characters to perform using apps like Hopscotch, Daisy the Dinosaur, and computer programs like Scratch.
